Club History

Timeless Elegance, Enduring Legacy

Established in 1876 by W.H. Walker, J. Wickwar, and H. Saunders, the Hill Club began with modest facilities; a billiard room and a bar, catering primarily to foreign Coffee, Cinchona, and Tea planters. Edward Rosling served as its inaugural president from 1899. The Club’s current two-story grey stone building, showcasing classic English colonial architecture with wooden staircases, high roofs, hardwood floors, fireplaces, and antique furnishings, was erected in the 1930s by the British firm Edwards, Reid, and Begg.

Despite early challenges, it flourished after a significant re-establishment in 1885. Throughout its history, pivotal decisions including major structural renovations in 1928 and the inclusive expansion of membership in the 1960s—have shaped its enduring legacy. For nearly a century, the Club maintained an exclusive membership policy, restricting entry to women and locals until 1967.

The strategic introduction of Temporary Members, including overseas visitors, further bolstered the Club’s stability and growth. Today, the Hill Club occupies a prominent 17-acre estate on Grand Hotel Road, adjacent to the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club and Sri Lanka’s Presidential Residence. With 44 rooms, including luxurious suites and a family chalet, the Club offers amenities such as a dining room, the ‘Casual Bar’ and ‘Mixed Bar’, a reading room, a ladies’ lounge, ‘Monsoon’ games room, and four International standard tennis courts. Its membership of approximately 950 individuals encompasses both Sri Lankans and foreign nationals. Renowned for its unwavering commitment to excellence and heritage preservation, the Hill Club remains an esteemed symbol of elegance and tradition in Nuwara Eliya. Positioned for continued prosperity, it stands ready to uphold its legacy for generations to come.
